Description

When you’re painting a landscape, it’s all about learning to really see—training your eye to notice what matters, and making choices about what to include and what to leave out. It’s also about trusting your artistic instincts to build a composition that feels right and draws the viewer in. This workshop is designed to give you a clear process to help you do exactly that.

We’ll be rolling up our sleeves and getting straight into the painting.

We’ll start by getting familiar with the paints and brush application. We’ll create some colour swatches and explore mark making to get into the flow. We then plan the design of the artwork, identify focal points, eye movement and so on.

Landscape #1: You’ll paint a single tree within a landscape, treating it as the focal point and exploring how light, and shadow define form.

Landscape #2: You'll apply the full process in a Tasmanian landscape. Starting with basic shapes and values, you’ll build up layers to develop structure, light, and texture. The focus is on working through the method clearly, allowing your own style to develop while aiming for a balanced composition.

The plan is, by the end of the workshop, for you to have created two landscapes - the 'Portrait of a Tree' and 'The Farmlands near Table Cape Lighthouse' on canvases.
